BGMEA demands uninterrupted supply of gas for smoother production

FE REPORT | Thursday, 21 April 2022

Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) urged the government to maintain uninterrupted supply of natural gas to the export-oriented garment and textile industries in order to facilitate smooth production.
BGMEA President Faruque Hassan made the request during a meeting with Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company Limited (TGTDCL) Managing Director Harunur Rashid Mollah, at the latter's office in the city on Wednesday, according to a statement.
Quoting Mr Hassan, the statement said, " The interruption in gas supply will disrupt production in various industrial sectors, including spinning, weaving, finishing, dyeing and printing sections in the industrial belts of Dhaka, Gazipur, Narayanganj, Savar, Ashulia, Manikganj, Narsingdi and Chattogram, hampering the export."
After passing an unprecedented difficult time, the apparel industry of Bangladesh is recovering from the pandemic fallout, and global buyers have grown confident in Bangladeshi garment manufacturers' capacity and commitment to deliver shipments on time even amid the Covid-19 crisis, he said.
"But factories will not be able to run in full capacity if gas is not supplied smoothly, making it difficult for the exporters to make shipment on time."
Given the importance of the apparel sector, the BGMEA requested the government to take required steps to ensure smooth supply of gas to the apparel and textile industries.
BGMEA Vice President Shahidullah Azim and Titas Gas Director (Operation) Md Salim Miah were also present at the meeting.
