BGMEA, donors tie up to boost workers\\\' skill

Apex body of clothing makers Monday signed a Memorandum of Understanding with a donor-funded project to facilitate vocational training for garment industry workers.
Bangladesh Garment Manufactureres and Exporters Association (BGMEA) vice president Reaz Bin Mahmood and team leader of Skill and Employment Programme of Bangladesh (SEP-B) Paul Weijers signed the MoU.
SEP-B is a development cooperation programme, co financed by the UK's Department for International Development and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation.
The signing ceremony was held at the BGMEA conference room in the city.
Speaking at the function, BGMEA President Atiqul Islam said: "We are focusing on the skill development of RMG workers and enhancement of workers' productivity. As part of this, we have taken the joint initiative for vocational training."
He said productivity of Vietnamese workers is much higher than those of Bangladesh because they are skilled.
He said the workers of RMG have to be skilled to reach the US$ 50 billion export target by 2021 and expressed hope that this skill development programme will help achieve this.
