FE Report
A section of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), led by its president Abdus Salam Murshedy, reiterated on Wednesday their stand on holding the election of the trade body on March 20. The BGMEA president said the new voters' list has been finalised and the election commission is also prepared for the polls. "We hope the March 20 election will be held in a festive mood," he said at a press briefing on the association premises in the capital. He said the opposition group is prepared for the election, too, while expressing his confidence about the election commission holding the election on the earlier announced date. The present commission has been conducting elections for the last 12 years, he added. Earlier, the biennial election of BGMEA was scheduled for February 24 which was postponed by the election commission after anomalies were detected in the voters' list. They announced the new date for holding the election on March 20. A total of 3,259 voters will cast their votes to elect 27 directors of the BGMEA. At least 54 candidates from two panels - Forum and Sammilito Parishad - are set to contest in the polls. The Forum panel is led by Anwar-ul-Alam Chowdhury Parvez, and Sammilito Parishad, led by Shafiul Islam Mohiuddin. According to the election guideline, the elected directors will select one president and four vice-presidents to run the association for two years (2011-2012). Among the vice-presidents, one is elected from Chittagong region and others are from Dhaka region.
