BGMEA for stern actions against 'terrorists' destroying RMG sector

FE Report | Thursday, 5 June 2008

Garment manufacturers Wednesday called upon the government to take stern actions against what they said "terrorists", who are out to destroy the country's flagship export sector.

"A section of miscreants in the name of workers are responsible for persistent attacks in the garment factories," said the chief of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA).

Addressing a press conference at BGMEA office, BGMEA president Anowar-ul-Alam Chowdhury (Parvez) also urged the government to establish 'industrial police' to ensure safety and security of the apparel industries and workers.

"If the government does not take necessary steps to ensure security for the country's garment sector and 2.4 million workers, the apparel sector will not sustain at all," the BGMEA president said.

Commenting on Tuesday's violent incidents in the Export Processing Zone, Ashulia, Savar, Mr. Chowdhury said a vested group spread the rumour that a garment worker was killed in a road accident. Actually a garment worker of Sharmin Group was injured in a road accident, he added.

Immediately after the incident, he said, several thousand garment workers went on rampage and damaged 40 to 50 garment factories. The violence prompted owners to close most of the factories in the area.

Replying a question, he said the government must punish the terrorists, who are intentionally creating unrest in the sector.
