BGMEA seeks cash incentives to implement minimum wages

Sunday, 10 June 2007

FE Report
The Bangladesh Garment Manufactures and Exporters Association (BGMEA) Saturday said the apparel units might not be able to implement the minimum wages for the workers as the sector is receiving lesser orders over the past few months.
The BGMEA urged the government for cash incentives to implement the minimum wages for the workers.
Earlier, the BGMEA said it would implement minimum wages for the workers within June 30.
While talking to the FE, president of the BGMEA Anowar-ul-Alam Chowdhury Pervez said a number of the apparel units remained in trouble since late last year as they (factories) are getting less number of orders from buyers.
He said a good number of apparel units are in better position to implement the minimum wage structure.
"We are committed to implementing the minimum wages for the workers but less orders at factories and high interest rates of the banks has created impediments", the BGMEA chief added.
The BGMEA said erratic power failure has been hampering production at the factories.
It urged the government to supply uninterrupted power during the week days.
