BGMEA to introduce grading system for garment units

FE Report | Wednesday, 18 June 2008

Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) is going to introduce a grading system for the garment units with respect to adherence of compliance issues, BGMEA said Tuesday.

The BGMEA audit teams will conduct extensive monitoring of the overall social compliance standards of the ready-made garment industry across the country.

South Asia Enterprise Development Facility (SEDF) will support the initiative under a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with the BGMEA Tuesday at the BGMEA office in the city.

Monitoring of all garment units and compilation of data might be completed by the next three months.

Speaking at the MoU signing ceremony, BGMEA President Anwar-Ul Alam Chowdhury Pervez said all the garment units of the country will become socially compliant through the measures.

BGMEA and SEDF jointly prepared a set of 129 questions for the purpose of monitoring the social compliance.

Based on that questionnaire, the factories will be monitored by the BGMEA compliance officers and their data will be incorporated into the system.

From this database software, BGMEA will easily be able to pinpoint the compliance standard of a unit and take necessary action for further improvement.

"We expect that our sector will have a chance to be fully compliant through this programme," BGMEA chief added.

He also said this will be the first comprehensive approach to evaluate social compliance scenario of the industry and it will also provide some generic recommendations set for those factories that need to be complied.

BGMEA president said it will also introduce a database for the garment workers under this project from August next aiming to know details about the workers and their conditions.

BGMEA vice president Mahmud Hasan Khan and SEDF Sector Development Coordinator signed the MoU on behalf of their respective sides.
