Apparel and Textile Exposition (BATEXPO-09), the leaders of garment exporters club, at a press conference Monday, said although a large number of potential buyers approached them but their price quotation was very low.
'At least 140 buyers thronged the BATEXPO-09 but most of them offered prices much below the production cost,' said the BGMEA president Abdus Salam Murshedy.
A significant number of buyers from Japan, Russia, Australia and South Africa visited the annual event.
Murshedy said, "This will create new markets for Bangladesh."
He sought policy support and urged the government for immediate reduction of the cost of finance and development of industrial infrastructures.
Frequent power cuts and low gas pressure are pushing up per unit cost of production significantly and eroding further the competitiveness of local exporters, he said.
The BGMEA leader called upon the government to immediately release the stimulus package for the exporters, cut bank interest rates to a single digit and reduce port charges.
