Bhangari shops posing a serious threat to public health

Thursday, 18 October 2007

In many parts of the Dhaka city, 'Bhangari shops (shops that deal in recyclable materials such as rags, broken glasses, waste paper, plastic containers etc) have been posing a serious threat to public health. Dirty and stinky waste materials collected by street urchins are sold to these shops that are located in lanes and by-lanes of residential areas. These waste materials are sorted out openly on the streets, making normal movement of the people difficult.
There is no denying that hundreds of poor people are dependent on the collection and sale of recyclable waste materials. By doing so they are also saving lots of money at the lower end of the trade. But those who are engaged in the trade need to be conscious of the health hazard involved in the careless sorting out and dumping of the same on the road and other public places. Besides, it is the job of the Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) to stop the business practices that creates problems for the road users.
