Eighteen cops, including Bhasantek Thana Officer-in-Charge, a Sub-Inspector and four Assistant Sub-Inspectors, have been withdrawn for trying to hide an incident of killing of a youth by a local miscreant for protesting stalking of his sister. Dhaka Metropolitan Police authorities on Monday evening pulled up the 18 police men, including Bhasantek OC Golam Nabi Sheikh, for neglect of duty. The OC and 17 other cops of Bhasantek Police Station showed sheer negligence to arrest Mamun, 27, after a case was filed aganinst him with the police station for beating to death Nasir Hossain, 25, for protesting stalking of his cousin on Friday. Seven named and four to five unnamed people were accused in the case. Mamun has been made the prime accused. Before Friday’s incident, alleged killer Mamun was already accused of physically and sexually assaulting 11 members of the same Bhashantek family. In February, another case was filed against Mamun and his associates for barbaric torture on a pregnant woman and 10 others of her family in Bhashantek. Mamun along with four of his cohorts – Bablu, 'Kana' Alam, Khokon and Chukka – verbally abused Laboni, 15, in Bhashantek on Friday afternoon, Nasir’s brother Mosharraf said in the statement of the case he filed with the police station. After Laboni told the stalking incident to Nasir, he scolded the gang and warned them of legal actions should they further harass her. Around 9:30pm, a man came to Nasir and took him to Mamun and his gang members, according to the case statement. Later that night, Mamun and his cohorts mercilessly beat Nasir with metal pipes and stabbed him indiscriminately in Goltek area, leaving him critically injured. Nasir was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital around 10:30pm where he died about two hours later. DMP’s Mirpur Division sources said the departmental action was taken against the 18 cops after an the order was issued by the higher authorities following an investigation, according to a news agency.
