FE Report
The state-run Bangladesh Handloom Board (BHB) has taken a number of projects starting from next June at a cost of Tk 2.08 billion aiming to revitalise thousands of ailing weaving units across the country, a high official said. "If we can implement the proposed schemes specially for the weavers in the country, who either had left the profession or were old but skilled, will get a chance to return to the industry," the BHB chairman Mustafa Kamal Haider told the FE. For the development of handloom industry in the country a number of fashion design centres, training institutes and also a basic centre (field office) would be set up at a cost of more than Tk 0.35 billion across the country, the official said. The official said the three-year projects will be taken up from first July 2011 and end in June 2013. The official said Mirpur (Dhaka), Kalihati (Tangail), Kumarkhali (Khustia) and Sirajgonj sadar have been selected for setting up the fashion design centres and training institutions as most weavers live in those areas. Modernisation of country's textile processing centres is essential so that the weavers can dye and design textile materials. A project costing Tk 0.4 billion has been taken to achieve it, the official explained. He added that 21 handloom exhibition centres will also be set up for marginal weavers in 21 upazilas where most of the weavers live and where display and sale of different kinds of handmade products will be carried out. Year long handloom expositions will be organised from June this year at a cost of Tk 0.14 billion, the official said. The government will set up service centres at Belkuchi (Pabna), Shahjadpur (Sirajganj), Kalihati (Tangail), Rupganj (Narayanganj), Kumarkhali (Khustia), Keraniganj (Dhaka) and Pabna sadar at a cost of nearly T 1.19 billion.
