The ECNEC Tuesday endorsed setting up of a 360-megawatt power plant and installation of three transmission and distribution lines to ease the severe electricity supply crisis, officials said.
The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC), the government's highest project approval body, okayed the four schemes, where the state-owned power companies will invest Tk 48.84 billion.
Presided over by the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the ECNEC meeting approved construction of a 360-mw power station at a cost of Tk 42.14 billion, that would be installed by June 2014 at Bheramara, in the country's south-western region.
Besides, upgradation of Rural Electrification Board's (REB) distribution systems in Rajshahi, Rangpur, Khulna and Barisal divisions investing Tk 13.22 billion, and installation of Ishwardi-Baghabari-Sirajganj-Bogra electricity transmission lines (revised) at a cost of Tk 4.83 billion have been approved.
The ECNEC also endorsed fund compensation at grid sub-stations 132kv/capacitor bank phase-1 (revised) project, costing Tk 540 million.
The Power Division officials said the state-owned North West Zone Power Generation Company Ltd would set up the 360-mw crucial power plant by June 2014.
Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) will provide nearly Tk 32.21 billion fund for the project, while the government will give the rest Tk 9.93 billion.
In the initial stage of undertaking the scheme, the North West Power faced difficulties due to alarming gas supply projection by the state-run energy corporation Petrobangla.
The Power Division officials said after implementation of the Bheramara project, power shortage to the country's impoverished southwest region would reduce significantly.
Bangladesh is facing more than 1,500-mw of power supply shortage against the demand for nearly over 5,000-mw in the peak hours everyday.
