Bhuiyan to meet Khaleda, seek permission for party council

Saturday, 7 July 2007

BNP secretary general Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan Friday claimed that he has made proposals to reform BNP in accordance with the party constitution, report agencies.
"We are doing everything as per (party) constitution," he told reporters at his Gulshan residence when his attention was drawn to BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia's remark that action would be taken against those who are engaged in anti-party activities.
Khaleda also said that if Bhuiyan has any sincerity he would talk to her about reforms and convening the party council.
In reply, Bhuiyan said he would meet the chairperson to seek her permission ahead of convening the party council meeting.
The BNP secretary general will spell out his second set of proposals soon seeking reforms to the party and the state apparatus.
Asked about her previous remark on Bhuiyan's activities, she said he must act in accordance with the BNP constitution.
"I also want reforms; party workers want reforms too, but all these proposals must be placed before the party council or the chairperson must be consulted about the proposals," Khaleda said.
Meanwhile, BNP joint secretary general Ashraf Hossain after a meeting with Bhuiyan separately said that they were taking preparations to hold the council meeting.
"The chairperson will be briefed on the progress of our preparations whenever she wants," Hossain told newsmen.
Differing with Khaleda's stance on this issue, Ashraf said, "We want to practice open politics, not indoor politics anymore."
Khaleda Thursday said the council meeting cannot be convened unless the ban on indoor politics is lifted.
"I am not in favour of her statement. There has not been a council meeting over past 14 years," Hossain said.
"The party constitution says that a council should be held every two years."
Ashraf told bdnews24.com at noon that the people entrusted with holding the councils did not bother to go by the party constitution.
Former BNP lawmakers and district leaders and workers from Khulna, Narshingdi, Barisal, Jessore, Rajshahi, Noakhali, Faridpur, Madaripur, Patuakhali, Netrokona and Comilla visited Bhuiyan's home in the morning and discussed the latest situation with him.
