Bhutan GDP grew by 8.5pc in 2006

THIMPHU, Nov 15 (PTI): The Bhutanese economy grew by 8.5 per cent in 2006 with the gross domestic product (GDP) increasing to Nu 31.6 billion from the previous Nu 29.2 billion, the National Statistical Bureau said.
The growth was achieved mainly by the electricity sector, which grew by 35.3 per cent because of the partial commissioning of the 1,020 MW Tala hydroelectric project, followed by mining and quarrying (63 per cent), hotels and restaurants (32.3 per cent) and finance, insurance and real estate (17 per cent).
The gross national income (GNI) was estimated at Nu 39.639 billion as compared to Nu 32.078 billion in 2005.
The inflation rate during the period increased by 4.5 per cent from the previous year.
