Bhutan hit by fuel price hike in India

THIMPHU, Jun 10 (PTI): With oil prices rising steeply in India, from where Bhutan imports all its petro products, Bhutanese have ended paying the most for fuel, even as the possibility of a ripple effect this might have on consumer items including food looms large.

A litre of petrol now costs Nu 47.28 (up by Nu 4.45) per litre and diesel Nu 34.59 a litre (increased by Nu 2.80) in the capital. Meanwhile, fuel hike has hit eastern Bhutan the worst. Cost of petrol has increased by Nu 6.10 in Pemagatshel and Nu 6.01 in Samdrup Jongkhar.

Besides, while cost of a litre of diesel in Pemagatshel has increased from Nu 31.25 to Nu 35.58, petrol is Nu 48.05, up from Nu 41.95 a litre.

Trade officials also confirmed that LPG price has been increased by Nu 44.22 per cylinder and will now cost Nu 402. LPG is subsidised by Rs 400 a cylinder by government of India.
