NEW DELHI, Oct 25 (AFP): Bhutan's newly married king and queen began their first official overseas trip together Monday, visiting close ally India for high-level talks and some sight-seeing.
King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, a hugely popular 31-year-old Oxford University graduate, and his newly crowned queen Jetsun Pema met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and were later due to dine with President Pratibha Patil.
After their meetings in New Delhi, the couple will head by train to Rajasthan, a desert state to the west of the Indian capital famed for its former royal palaces.
India is a key backer of its neighbour Bhutan, a tiny Himalayan kingdom that also borders China. New Delhi provides humanitarian aid, funding for its hydroelectric plants and training for its army.
