FE REPORT
Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said on Sunday that the selfie with US President Joe Biden would not save the ruling Awami League (AL).
He made the observation apparently in response to the joyous mood the ruling AL expressed following Sheikh Hasina's selfie with Joe Biden during the G-20 summit in New Delhi, India on Friday.
"The people of the country have the power to choose which party they will elect. So, please hold a free, fair and participatory national election. People will not forgive the ruling party, if they cannot cast their votes to elect the government of their own. Otherwise, neither Joe Biden nor his selfie will save you."
He came up with the remarks during a commemorative discussion - organised on the occasion of death anniversary of former finance minister M Saifur Rahman at Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) in the capital.
Saifur Rahman Smriti Parishad organised the discussion, presided over by his son Naser Rahman. BNP Organising Secretary Sakhawat Hossain Jibon was also present, among others, in the programme.
AL General Secretary Obaidul Quader on Saturday (September 9) during a rally in the capital said the US President's selfie with the PM is a huge setback for BNP.
"BNP has been eyeing Joe Biden, anticipating a shift in his support from AL to BNP," he mentioned.
"However, Joe Biden taking selfie with Sheikh Hasina speaks a lot. Which path will BNP choose now? Its retreat has already begun."
About BNP's mass rally on Saturday, Mr Quader said: "BNP's programmes have no public support. It does not seem many people are attending the party's mass rally."
"The US is distancing from BNP. Its leaders and activists should stop looking to the US for support."
"Foreign visitors' presence in Bangladesh is a green signal for AL. Following Bangabandhu's principles, we want to be friends with everyone," the AL general secretary added.
However, Mirza Fakhrul said, "The ill fate of this nation is - we don't like to go to the basic point. We prefer to go for issues like selfie. I tell you (Obaidul Quader and AL) my advice - please hang the picture on your necks - it will help you a lot."
