Bidi makers urge govt to withdraw taxes

Saturday, 26 June 2010

FE Report
The bidi manufactures have urged the government to withdraw taxes on cigarette, considering the labour-intensive sector that employs thousands of rural women.
‘Bidi Shilpo Malik Samiti’, a platform of the bidi industry owners, said additional taxes on hand-made cigarette would ruin the industry, creating unemployment in rural areas.
Bijoy Krishno Dey, senior vice president of the association said unless the government withdraws taxes on the labour-intensive small biri industry, it would render thousands of workers jobless.
Samiti leaders said the government should raisetaxes on cigarettes and fix the price of a 10-piece cigarette packet at minimum Tk 20.
They made the call Thursday while speaking at a press conference in the city.
