FE Report
The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) approved Tuesday the construction of much-talked about Bijoysarani extension road linking the Tejgaon industrial area.
It also endorsed seven other development projects, including installation of Haripur 360-megawatt (MW) power plant, at the meeting.
Presided over by the Chief Adviser of the caretaker government, Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed, the meeting was held at the NEC conference room in the city.
After the meeting, Finance adviser Mirza Azizul Islam told newsmen that the ECNEC okayed the Bijoysarani extension road project, which will be constructed by June 2009 at a cost of Tk 1.22 billion.
"To ease the traffic congestion in the city the extension road will be constructed," he said.
A source in the ECNEC meeting Tuesday told the FE that the government would acquire necessary land and demolish the legal and illegal structures on the project areas to construct the 0.73 kilometres road from the east side of Bijoysarani to Tejgaon industrial area.
The government might also acquire the Rangs Bhaban and demolish it for construction of the extension road, he added.
"A major portion of the Tk 1.22 billion project fund will be spent on land acquisition and compensation to the owners for the losses of property for construction of the Bijoysarani extension road," he said referring to the discussion at the ECNEC meeting.
Mirza Azizul Islam said eight projects involving a total cost of Tk 40.39 billion were approved at the meeting.
The Japanese donor agency -- Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) -- will provide Tk 25.09 billion towards financing the Tk 35.07 billion Haripur power project. The rest of the fund will be mobilised by the government, he said.
The ECNEC approved six other projects -- a 150-bed hospital for the government employees at a cost of Tk 0.42 billion, development of digital mapping system under the Directorate of Bangladesh Land Record and Survey at a cost Tk 1.15 billion, rehabilitation of eight ferries and six pontoons of the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) at a cost of Tk 0.58 billion, rehabilitation of Dhaka-Narayanganj railway line at a cost of Tk 0.47 billion, development of Khulna and Benapole railway stations at a cost of Tk 0.49 billion and drinking water supply from the deep irrigation pumps (phase-II) at a cost of Tk 0.99 billion.
But five projects, including 150MW Shikolbaha power plant, placed at the ECNEC meeting Tuesday were not approved.
The meeting sources said that the ECNEC sent back the Shikolbaha power plant project proposal for further scrutiny as there were some problems at the procedural stage and lack of government funds.
The Shikolbaha power station will require Tk 8.14 billion, which was to be provided by the government from its own sources.
Advisers of the caretaker administrations and high officials of different ministries were present at the ECNEC meeting.
