Bill in JS soon for changing word 'Upajati'
Sunday, 2 August 2009
A bill is going to be placed in the next parliament session for bringing a change in the nomenclature of 'Adibashi' instead of 'Upajati' in defining the ethnic communities, reports UNB.
"The Cabinet has in principle approved the bill as the indigenous people prefer to be called as 'Adibashi' instead of 'Upajati'. This is the right way to show respect to the minority communities," State Minister for CHT Affairs Dipankar Talukdar told a discussion in the city Saturday.
The discussion titled 'The Lifestyle of Bangladeshi Small Ethnic Adibashis: Our Views,' was organised by Development Initiative for Inclusive People (DIIP) at the National Press Club.
Chairman of the Refugees Affairs Taskforce Jatindra Lal Tripura MP, member of Standing Committee on Primary and Mass Education Narayan Chandra Chand MP, Information Secretary Dr Kamal Abdul Naser Chowdhury and Prof Sadeka Halim of Dhaka University, among others, spoke at the function.
