Thursday, 24 November 2011

A bill seeking to split Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) into two - Dhaka North City Corporation and Dhaka South City Corporation - for better services and civic amenities to the city dwellers was introduced in parliament Wednesday night. State Minister for LGRD Jahangir Kabir Nanak introduced the Local Government (City Corporation) (Amendment) Bill, 2011, reports UNB. The statement of objective of the bill said the population of Dhaka city has increased to more than 10 million (one crore). It is very difficult to provide services for the huge population by one body. The city dwellers are not getting the desired services and civic amenities. Besides, various problems are being cropped up in repairing and maintaining roads and taking care of infrastructures in the DCC areas. It said the total number of wards of DCC is 92 and the total number of councillors is 123 including 31 women's reserved seats. In this situation, the statement said, it is essential to split the existing Dhaka City Corporation into two. Independent member Fazlul Azim opposed the introduction of the bill. His objection was rejected by voice vote. The bill was referred to the Standing Committee for further scrutiny and return to the House in seven days.
