A platform of cabin crew, officials and employees of Biman Bangladesh Airlines has called a 48-hour strike from April 16 demanding resignation of chairman and dissolution of board of directors, reports bdnews24.com.
Biman Bachao Oikya Parishad (Save Biman Unity Council) convenor Mohammad Moshiqur Rahman announced the strike from a protest rally after a sit-in demonstration at the flag carrier's headquarters Balaka at Kurmitola Tuesday.
"No employees of Biman will join work from 6:00 am on April 16 to 6:00 am on April 18. But, it will not be necessary if our demands are met beforehand," he said.
Former Air Force chief Jamal Uddin Ahmed is the chairman of Biman, which has a 10-member board of directors. Shahjalal International Airport will grind to a virtual halt if the Biman staff enforce the strike.
Biman pilots, cabin crew, officials and workers have been protesting since March 5 over the demands, saying that the board is corrupt and incompetent.
The Parishad on March 25 declared the Biman directors 'unwanted' and announced Tuesday's programmes.
A number of police personnel surrounded the Balaka building during the protests Tuesday.
Moshiqur Rahman, also president of Biman Sramik League and the carrier's ground service supervisor, said all the organisations of the Biman staff took the decision to enforce the strike.
"Jamal Uddin will not be allowed to enter the office until he resigns," he added.
Biman employees, led by Rahman, locked the chairman's office after a rally followed by the sit-in.
Bangladesh Air Service Pilot Association president Sayeed Mahbub Helal, Biman Workers Union president Mohammad Shajahan and Biman Officers Association president Zahirul Haque, among others, delivered speeches at the rally.
