Biman to launch in-flight duty-free shop soon

Biman Bangladesh Airlines is going to launch in-flight duty-free shop as part of improving its in-flight service, especially to attract business class passengers.
The proposed duty-free shop will sell different kinds of souvenirs, toys, jewellery and fashion items, sources said.
The national carrier has already got necessary permission from the Ministry of Commerce in this regard. It has also signed agreement with a foreign company to cater the service.
Biman sources said Hong Kong-based King Power Group will provide the in-flight service. As per the agreement with the company, the national carrier will get 40 per cent commission.
However, the company is waiting to get permission from the customs authority for importing products to launch the service.
Recently, Biman managing director and CEO Kevin John Steele has sent a letter to the Ministry of Finance, seeking cooperation in getting approval for importing duty-free products.
The Biman CEO hoped that the carrier will be able to launch the service by next two or three weeks. In the meantime, they will be able to import necessary products for the shop.
Biman has taken the initiative following resentment over its in-flight service by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina during her arrival from a visit to London and Belarus at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in July last.
The airlines also re-launched its in-flight magazine in September after six years' suspension.
The chairman of Biman management board earlier told the media that the airlines would launch in-flight duty-free shop.
He also said it was taking time, as the service provider had to resolve tax-related issues with the National Board of Revenue (NBR).
