Biman: Too heavy to fly

Sunday, 10 August 2014

A media report on August 09 on the national flag carrier Bangladesh Biman causes agony. The airline, overburdened by manpower, is crawling along with  taxpayers' easy money. Basically Biman does not earn its 'keep'; so why allow it keep wasting public money? Biman is a massive monopoly with no concern about passengers and customers. Their business motto has become "We do as we wish; take it or leave it" instead of "The customer is always right". They have been totally spoiled with subsidies. Biman just can not waste taxpayers' money any more. Their 'free' travelling must come to an end.
Certain measures, if taken urgently, can possibly help the state-owned organisation from suffering losses. The suggested measures are: (1) Close all non-flight destination offices immediately and     terminate all the staff located there. If needed, appoint travel agents in those stations. (2) Remove useless stations if they are politically sponsored. (3) Head of Biman must be a 'business professional'. (4) Ratio of office and flight staff should be drastically reduced. Minimum manpower reduction must be at least thirty per cent across the overall existing manpower. (5) Seriously review continuation of local flights.
