Wednesday, 18 March 2015
The BIMSTEC member countries finalised a draft memorandum of understanding (MoU) Monday to set up power grid connections for electricity trade, reports UNB.
The seven-member countries -- Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Thailand -- will sign the deal.
Senior officials of the member countries reached a consensus in this regard at the 5th meeting of the BIMSTEC Task Force on Trans Power at Hotel Sonargaon in the city.
Power Division Secretary Monowar Islam inaugurated the meeting. BIMSTEC Secretary General Sumith Nakandala also spoke on the occasion. The officials said the MoU will help foster cooperation among the member countries in the energy sector.
They also observed that they need to secure stable and affordable energy supply through exploration and utilisation of the regional energy resource potentials, which would remain a core priority for BIMSTEC to sustain the growth.
