Bird flu patient recovering in China

Monday, 10 December 2007

BEIJING, Dec 9 (AFP): A 52-year-old Chinese man whose son died recently from bird flu and who himself has been infected with the highly dangerous virus is gradually recovering, state media reported Sunday.
The patient, identified by his surname Lu, showed signs of improvement on Saturday, five days after he developed fever and pneumonia symptoms, Xinhua news agency said, citing medical officials in east China's Jiangsu province.
His son died last Sunday from the H5N1 avian flu strain, which has killed more than 200 people worldwide since 2003.
Xinhua did not say whether it was a case of human-to-human transmission, a possibility that had immediately set off alarm bells in the global health community.
