Biswa Sahitya Kendra (BSK), a national platform that promotes reading habits among students and general public, Friday awarded 3,554 school students for their outstanding book-reading habit in 2009.
BSK in co-operation with Grameenphone, the country's leading telecom operator, organised the two-day programme at Ramna Batmul attended by hundreds of school boys and girls of the capital.
Organisers handed over the award to 3,554 students, who were selected from 49 city schools, under four categories. A total of 25,000 students representing 75 city schools participated in different types of competition.
The centre's main activities are aimed at expanding the mental horizon of people through exposing them to world literature. Students are encouraged to read at least 16 quality books every year.
Abdullah Abu Sayeed, head of the institution, said everyone, particularly the soft-minded school students, should adopt the reading habit to remove darkness from the society by learning themselves.
"The prize the students are receiving will definitely encourage them to be enlightened as they will lead the nation in future," he said.
Vice-chancellor of BRAC University and also former adviser of caretaker government Professor Jamilur Reza Choudhury branded the students as real founders of the country and urged their guardians to make congenial atmosphere for well nourishment to their children.
