Sale of carpet in the city is on the rise due to biting winter cold. Though price of carpet this season has increased compared to last year's rates, cold weather has forced people to buy carpets, some buyers said. Sundarban Carpet House at city's Paltan area is always found crowded with buyers. Saifuddin, manager of Sundarban Carpet House told the FE that when winter sets in, sale of carpet goes up especially in December-January period. Every day hundreds of customers are thronging the shops to buy carpets, particularly locally made ones, he said. I want to buy local carpets because of its cheap price, Farhana, a buyer told the FE. Per yard of carpet is being sold from Tk 300 to Tk 2000 depending on quality and colour, the sellers said. Abul Kalam, a manager of Madina Carpet House at city's Elephant Road told the FE: no customers are going back without buying carpet because of unbearable cold weather. Average daily sale of carpet is now 5,000 yards, while it was 500 yards in summer season, he said. Manager of Shahi Carpet, Shabuddin told the FE: Those who have recently bought apartments, constructed houses are mostly buying carpets.
