BIWTA starts dredging Mongla-Ghashiakhali channel

Tuesday, 1 July 2014

Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) on Tuesday started the dredging of the 22-km long Mongla-Ghashiakhali channel. The dredging will be completed in two phases under a Tk 2.50 billion  project and it will open up the international route of shipping between India and Bangladesh again after a three-year pause. The Mongla-Ghashiakhali channel turned unsuitable for shipping three years back because of excessive siltation in the Kumarkhali River, according to a news agency.
