Four state-owned enterprises (SOEs) will purchase a substantial number of jute sacks from the government jute-mills this fiscal, officials said. The Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation (BJMC) has obtained an order of Tk 1,050 million to supply about 15 million jute sacks to the Department of Food (DoF) and Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation (BADC), a high official of the BJMC marketing department said. The jute-mills under the BJMC will also sell jute sacks to Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation (BCIC) and Bangladesh Sugar and Food Industries Corporation (BSFIC). The SOEs have taken the decision to purchase jute products from the BJMC in line with the government's decision of familiarising eco-friendly jute goods in public and private sectors. The yearly demand of jute sacks of the DoF is about 40 million, while that of BADC is 5.7 million, BCIC 3.8 million and BSFIC 2.4 million, officials said. The government has formulated the Jute Packaging Mandatory Act 2010, making the use of jute goods compulsory. Besides, not using jute goods is also an offence under the Environmental Protection (Amendment) Act 2010. Earlier, the Ministry of Textiles and Jute and the Ministry of Forest and Environment, at a meeting on April 13, emphasised wider use of jute goods, considering the environment and for brining back the past glory of the 'golden fibre' of Bangladesh. In the meeting, Jute Minister Abdul Latif Siddique stressed on motivating the private sector enterprises to use jute goods instead of polythene products. He said the government would soon sit with all the organisations, using polythene bags, to motivate them, so that they use jute goods instead of polythene products.
