BKB move to realise embezzled loan

Brahmanbaria, November 8, 2010: Bangladesh Krishi Bank (BKB) has taken a move to realise its loan worth Tk 11.60 million after a gap of nine years, BKB sources said.
With the accumulated interest money, the amount now stands at Tk 19.50 million.
The loan was allegedly misappropriated by the field officials of Comilla Proshika, now a defunct NGO.
According to BKB sources, the state-owned bank disbursed Tk11.60 million loan under a project titled 'Grameen Mohilader Karmasangsthan Sristy Prokalpa' among 3000 women in 1993-94 fiscal.
BKB Laor Fatepur, Baish Moja and Nabinagar branches of Nabinagar Upazila disbursed the loan. Fifty "Gram Dal Samity" was listed and Comilla Proshika appointed 13 field officers in this project, local people said.
BKB Baish Moja branch opened 541 accounts, Nabinagar branch 799 accounts and Laor Fatepur branch 787 accounts during the period.
Loan disbursement and recovery was closed when the Board of Management of Comilla Proshika involved in factional fued.
BKB officials did not try to recover the outstanding loan for nine years.
In 2009, BKB Chief Regional Manager (CRM) for Brahmanbaria region Md Sahidul Islam and BKB assistant general manager (AGM) Md Abul Hossain revived the case.
With BKB's renewed efforts, some members refunded a total of Tk 0.155 million.
