BKB to disburse Tk 2.58b in Barisal division

BARISAL, June 08 (BSS): Disbursement of soft agricultural loans has been progressing fast among the farmers of six southern districts under Barisal division aiming at increasing agricultural production in the region.
Bangladesh Krishi Bank (BKB) has fixed a target of disbursement of Tk 2.58 billion (258 crore) through 118 branches of the bank of the region during the current fiscal year.
According to a BKB source, the loans are being disbursed among the farmers for cultivation of Aus, Aman, Boro, wheat, mustard, banana, maize, different varieties of vegetables, setting up of poultry and dairy farms, fish farming, beef fattening, purchase of irrigation equipment, cows, fishing nets and boats, and Women Entrepreneurship Development Programme (WEDP).
On an average, 72 per cent of loans have been disbursed among 0.25 million farmers of the region until May 31 last.
When contacted, General Manager of BKB Maswood Alam Khan told the news agency that BKB's employees had been serving only the poor, small and marginal farmers of the country with different amounts of credit for boosting production.
Micro-credit was introduced in the country by the bank for the first time for the benefit of the poor, small and marginal farmers, he added.
BKB has fixed a target of Tk 35.0 billion as agricultural loans for disbursement among the farmers of six divisions of the country during the current fiscal.
Meanwhile, realisation of agricultural loans from the farmers of six southern districts under Barisal division has been going on in full swing.
BKB of Barisal region has taken up a target of recovery of Tk 1.64 billion of its outstanding loans from the farmers of the districts in the current fiscal year (2006-2007).
The sources said a sum of Tk 1.48 billion had been realised from the farmers as outstanding agricultural loans until May 31 last.
