BKMEA to raise workers' wages by 15 to 20pc
FE Report | Tuesday, 19 August 2008
The country's knit manufacturers Monday said there is no option but to provide a special allowance to their workers in the wake of skyrocketing prices of essential commodities and cool down the unrest prevailing in the industry.
The knit manufacturers said this at special general meeting held at Narayanganj Club auditorium. They discussed about the amount of allowance, time table for introduction of the allowances and prevailing unrest in the industry.
President of Bangladesh Knit Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) Md Fazlul Hoque presided over the meeting.
According to a proposal submitted by the BKMEA to the labour and manpower ministry, two categories of workers will receive the benefit. The helper category will get Tk 200 and non-helpers Tk 300 as allowance each month in addition to their wages.
Earlier, BKMEA at a press conference announced that they will raise the wages between 15 and 20 per cent of the basic salary.
BKMEA president said the knit manufacturers want to implement the allowances soon adding: "It might be executed sometime during Ramadan or before Eid-ul-Fitr."
As per the BKMEA constitution, any proposal should have to be approved in its general meeting after being approval by the board of directors.
He also said: "Today's (Monday) meeting authorised the board members to negotiate with the government on different outstanding issues including raising incentives and fix detailed time table for giving the allowance."
He also said the BKMEA members urged the government to ensure security at all factories as isolated incidences cause much harm to the industry.
"We will also sit with the government on these issues along with other demands," he added.
