Black-flag demo held in front of Petrobangla

Friday, 25 September 2009

FE Report
The National Committee to Protect Oil, Gas, Mineral Resources, Power and Ports Thursday arranged a black-flag demonstration near the Petrobangla head office protesting against leasing out of gas blocks in the Bay to foreign firms.
Hundreds of activists gathered in front of the Petrobangla HO at Karwanbazar in the city at 11:00am pressing for the realisation of their five-point demand.
It includes cancellation of the lease of three offshore gas blocks to foreign companies, cancellation of the model PSC (Production Sharing Contract) 2008, formulation of a new model PSC, full implementation of Fulbari Treaty and punishment of those responsible for the "attack" on the activists of the coalition on September 2.
Addressing the gathering, Convener of the national committee Engr Sheikh Muhammad Shahidullah alleged that there must have been "underhand dealings" at higher level of the government behind the agreed lease of the three gas blocks to foreign companies.
"Such gas deal is impossible without underhand dealings," he told on the occasion.
On September 2, a protest march of the activists of the National Committee towards the petroleum corporation office was foiled by police, which left many injured.
