Blast hits rail station in Xinjiang

Wednesday, 30 April 2014

BEIJING: An explosion hit a railway station in the capital of China's Xinjiang Wednesday, state media reported, the same day that President Xi Jinping ended a visit to the restive region.
The blast occurred at around 7pm local time at the south railway station in Urumqi, Xinhua news agency said.
It added that the explosion was "centred around luggage left on the ground between the station exit and a public bus stop," citing witnesses.
Xinhua said a local government official confirmed there were casualties from the blast, but the number remains unclear.
One online post on the Weibo social network from Beijing News said at least 50 people had been injured, citing police officers, but this has since been deleted.
Ambulances and police cars rushed to the scene, Xinhua said.
The station was closed after the incident and services suspended but it has since been reopened. Police evacuated people from nearby areas, the state news agency quoted an officer as saying, according to a news agency.
