Business leaders of Bangladesh Malaysia Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BMCCI) Saturday urged the government to strengthen diplomatic negotiation with Malaysian government to achieve duty-free access of 19 products to Malaysian markets.
"We managed to convince high level Malaysian government officials during the Showcase Bangladesh 2010 to provide duty-free access of some Bangladeshi products," Secretary General of BMCCI and Chief Coordinator of the mega event Syed Moazzam Hossain said.
He said that it's now the duty of Bangladesh government to proceed the matter forward.
Mr Moazzam was addressing a press conference at a city hotel to elaborate the outcomes of the Showcase Bangladesh 2010, held in Kuala Lumpur from January 8 till 10, 2010 aiming to promote Bangladeshi exports, culture and heritage in Malaysia.
Duty-free access of jute products, frozen food, knitwear, woven garments, leather and leather products, pharmaceuticals, footwear, ceramics and textile products were in the list which Malaysian government verbally agreed to consider, he said.
BMCCI organised the first ever Bangladesh trade show in Malaysia in collaboration with Bangladesh High Commission in Kuala Lumpur supported by Malaysia South-South Association (MASSA) and the Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers (FMM).
"Existing trade gap between Bangladesh and Malaysia can be curbed significantly if duty-free access of these 19 products can be achieved," Mr Moazzam claimed.
Bangladesh exported products worth US$31.28 million to Malaysia while imported $703.27 million worth of goods during the fiscal year 2008-09. Trade imbalance declines in favour of Malaysian side by $671.99 million, data revealed by Export Promotion Bureau showed.
He urged Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to take initiative prior to her official visit to Malaysia on May 10, 2010.
Elaborating the success of the latest 'Showcase Bangladesh 2010' he said that Bangladeshi exporters got the opportunity to introduce and promote their quality products to the Malaysian buyers that would act as stepping stone in accelerating the bilateral trade relations.
"It has been possible to create some confidence among the Malaysian investors, through direct interactions, to be interested to invest in Bangladesh," organisers claimed.
They also mentioned about two MoUs on RMG products and electronic banking transaction services that were signed between the BMCCI members and their Malaysian counterparts.
