RAJSHAHI, Nov 7: Cultivation of paddy and tomato on several hundred hectares of land has been hit due to stealing of valuable electric wires and transformers from live electric lines in the Barind Multipurpose Develop-ment Authorities (BMDA) project area in Rajshahi district.
But the law enforcement agencies seemed utterly helpless to control or arrest the gangsters.
Farmers using the BMDA irrigation facilities complained that due to stealing of electric wires of 12 deep tubewells at Fulbari, Tablagpur, Patharghata, Madhupur and Dhamina Mouza under Deopeara Union under Godagari Thana, irrigation of some 1,000 bighas of standing Aman crop and 250 bighas of tomato have remained completely suspended jeopardising smooth growth of those crops.
Lands are getting dry due to suspension of water supply, the farmers complained.
They further said though the desperate farmers were turning to the REB and BMDA offices to reinstal the wires, they were finding no way out.
According to sources, at dead of night on September 27 heavy electric wires connecting 12 deep tubewells of Fulbari, Tablagpur, Patharg-hata, Madhupur, Ishwaripur and Dhamina Mouza under Deopeara union were stolen.
