BNP against Dhaka split
Friday, 21 October 2011
Opposition BNP Thursday alleged the government decision to split Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) into two is a bid to delay its election sensing the ruling party's defeat, reports UNB.
Accusing the ruling party of playing foul BNP acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir at a press conference demanded immediate election to the DCC.
He said the government has adopted a new strategy of wasting time by taking such decision of dividing the DCC and deceiving the people.
Fakhrul said the government has set yet another example of undemocratic step and proved that it has been isolated from the people.
He said big cities like New York, London, New Delhi and Kolkata have only one city Mayor. The decision to breaking up DCC is politically motivated.
DCC Mayor and BNP vice chairman Sadeque Hossain Khoka who was present at the press conference said he has already suggested bringing DCC under the Prime Minister's Office to strengthen it. But without doing this, the government took recourse to divide it.
Khoka, also convenor of Dhaka city BNP, said the government wants to appoint an administrator in the city corporation by removing him so that he cannot play his political role.
BNP standing committee member MK Anwar also spoke on the issue at the press conference.
