BNP announces countrywide protest rally on April 28
Monday, 26 April 2010
Opposition BNP Sunday announced countrywide protest rallies on April 28 against what it termed 'unprecedented vote rigging' in the Bhola-3 by-election that was held on Saturday.
The protest rally to be held in all districts, municipalities and divisional headquarters will also protest attack on BNP's demonstration in different parts of the capital city for last few days demanding resolution of crisis of electricity, water and gas.
BNP national standing committee member Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain announced the programme of countrywide protest meetings from a rally at the city's Muktangon this afternoon while addressing it as chief guest.
The city BNP organised the Muktangon demonstration in protest of 'farcical, conspiratorial' rigging of the Bhola-3 by-election, demanding immediate resignation of Chief Election Commissioner and two Election Commissioners and immediate announcement of fresh schedules of Bhola-3 by-election as well as demanding resolution of crisis of utilities services and protesting the government's repression of the opposition.
Addressing the rally BNP leaders termed the Bhola-3 election as not an election of people but election of the government, the ruling party, the Election Commission, the police and the civil administration.
They called upon the party faithful to prepare for anti-government movement under the leadership of the party chairperson Khaleda Zia.
The BNP rally rejected the Bhola-3 by-election and demanded immediate resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner Dr ATM Shamsul Huda and two commissioners and announcement of fresh schedule of the by-election.
Presided over by BNP vice-chairman and city Mayor Sadeq Hossain Khoka, the rally was addressed among others by leaders of BNP and its front and associate organisations including Barrister Moudud Ahmed, Barrister Rafiqul Islam Mia, Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan, Abdullah Al Noman, Amanullah Aman, Fazlul Huq Milon, Abul Khair Bhuiyan MP, Khairul Kabir Khokon, Shirin Sultana, Abdus Salam, Habib-un-Nabi Khan Sohel, Saiful Alam Nirob, Mir Sarafat Ali Sapu, Salahuddin Tuku and Amirul Islam Alim.
Moudud Ahmed said following the Bhola-3 by-polls Awami League again proved that they did not believe in democracy and that it was a fascist, autocratic political party.
He said in the last 50 years he had not seen such an election of injustice, terrorism and anarchy.
Chief guest Dr Khandaker Moshrraf Hossain said Bhola-3 election was an election of dacoity marked by terrorism, threat and attack and obstruction to voters. People had rejected the election, he said, adding that they were clearly demanding resignation of the CEC and two ECs.
Justifying his allegation he mentioned some newspapers reports today (Sunday) over the by-election, particularly Daily Prothom Alo, terming it a pro-government newspaper.
He called for taking preparations to ensure the success of the programmes of the movement, which would be called by Khaleda Zia to protect the country and its people.
BNP joint secretary general Amanullah Aman said if Bhola-3 by-election had been held in a free, fair and neutral manner BNP candidate Maj Hafizuddin Ahmed would win by a big margin of 50,000 votes.
Aman, who was chief coordinator of the BNP candidate in the by-election, described various incidents of rigging, illegally sealing ballot papers in favour of AL candidate, driving out of BNP polling agents and threats and obstruction to voters from going to polling centers.
He said BNP will not allow any more elections to be held under the present Election Commission.
BNP vice-chairman Abdullah Al Noman urged the party's highest policy making body to fix up a date of ultimatum for resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner and the Election Commissioners and after that deadline they will not accept the CEC and ECs.
BNP standing committee member Barrister Rafiqul Islam Mia said a trial would have to be held of those who were responsible for the farcical Bhola-3 by-election.
Earlier, a chaotic situation was created in the rally centering protocol of speakers at the rally between Shechha Sebok Dal and Jubo Dal, voluntary and youth wings of BNP respectively. The shouting and indisciplined situation prevailed for about 15 minutes. Later it was contained by the influence of senior leaders.
