BNP bashes ACC for \\\'one-eyed policy\\\'

BNP on Wednesday alleged that the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) is following a one-eyed policy to save the ruling party leaders.
“On one hand, the ACC suddenly decided not to continue the graft case in which minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya had been convicted, on the other it is stubbornly continuing two trust cases against BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia despite lawyers’ repeated appeals to withdraw those,” said BNP spokesman Asaduzzaman Ripon.
He further said, “The ACC has also decided to discontinue graft cases against nearly 300 ruling party men. We think the statuary body is following a one-eyed policy in dealing with corruption cases.”
Ripon, BNP’s international affairs secretary, came up with the allegation at a press briefing at BNP’s Nayapaltan central office, a news agency report said.
He urged the anti-graft watchdog not to tarnish its image further by following dual policy in dealing with corruption.
“If you (ACC) want to withdraw the cases against ministers and ruling party men, you’ll have to pull out that of against BNP leaders and activists. It’s unbecoming to recommend only for withdrawal of the cases filed against ruling party men, keeping those in place filed against our leaders and activists,” Ripon observed.
Coming down hard on ACC Commissioner M Sahabuddin Chuppu for what he said his controversial activities, the BNP leader said the commissioner has decided to discontinue the case against Relief and Disaster Management Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya at meeting held in absence of ACC Chairman. “I want to ask him whether he did the right thing as per the constitution.”
He regretted that the constitutional bodies have got now highly politicised as people working their like to play a puppet role though they have taken oath to discharge their duties independently without any favour.
Ripon hoped that the ACC will try to uphold its good image by playing a neutral role and showing the respect for the rule of law.
Sought his party’s reaction to the court’s bail to ex-minister and Awami League presidium member Abdul Latif Siddique in the cases in connection with hurting people’s religious sentiment by his anti-Islamic remarks, the BNP leader said the government has taken Ramadan month as a chance to release him as it thinks people will not wage any movement in this month against it.
