BNP calls hartal in Sylhet for Tuesday

Monday, 29 December 2014

BNP's local unit in Sylhet has called a half-day hartal (shutdown) in the district for Tuesday in protest against the arrest of its metropolitan unit convener. Police arrested Shahriar Hossain Chowdhury and Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) activists Sumon Chakraborty and Jubel Ahmed on Monday morning. ‘They were trying to cause disorder,’ Sylhet Metropolitan Police’s Additional Deputy Commissioner Rahmat Ullah said. The BNP and its allies have enforced a nationwide dawn-to-dusk shutdown protesting the denial of permission for their Gazipur rally and demanding the release of their senior leaders. Meanwhile, the JCD took out a procession in the morning in Sylhet city’s Kazituli and exploded an improvised bomb. Long-haul buses have been grounded but trains were running on schedule, according to a news agency.
