BNP condemns BJP leader remarks

Monday, 21 April 2014

Strongly condemning Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) senior leader Subramanian Swamy’s remark that Bangladesh should compensate India with land, BNP Monday termed his comment a serious threat to the country’s independence and sovereignty.
In a statement, BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said, “The demand for one-third lands of Bangladesh by BJP leader Subramanian Swamy is not only audacious but also an extreme threat to Bangladesh’s independence and sovereignty.”
Mentioning India a neighbour, he said Bangladesh wants friendship from Indian politicians instead of rhetoric, according to a news agency.
“Bangladesh has respect for the independence and sovereignty of all the countries in the world. In regard to independence and sovereignty, Bangladesh always expects respectful, courteous and consistent remarks from politicians of its neighbouring countries,” Fakhrul said.
He said the leaders of India are living in fool’s paradise if they consider themselves as the guardians of their neighboring countries.
On April 18 at Guwahati in India, BJP leader Swamy said Bangladesh should compensate India with land for what he said the influx of its citizens to the neighbouring country. “If Bangladesh does not agree to take back its people, then the country should compensate by giving land to India.”
