BNP demands judicial magistrates to work at field level on polls day

Monday, 29 December 2008

The BNP-led four-party alliance Sunday called for allowing the judicial magistrates, appointed by the Election Commission (EC), to work at the field level on the election day to ensure total credibility in the polling process, reports BSS.
A delegation of the alliance led by BNP's Joint Secretary General Nazrul Islam Khan placed a demand in this regard at a meeting with Election Commissioner Brig Gen (retd) M Sakhawat Hossain at the EC secretariat.
After the meeting, Nazrul Islam Khan told reporters that they learnt from the press reports that 286 EC appointed judicial magistrates would work in their offices at the district towns.
"This is an exception from other elections. Nothing such happened in the past and it is an obstacle to holding free and fair polls," he said fearing that the electoral rules formulated by the EC might not be implemented properly this time.
Other members of the delegation were Assistant Secretary General of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Barrister Abdur Razzak and Law Affairs Secretary Advocate Jasim Uddin Sarker.
