Friday, 29 October 2010
Opposition BNP has demanded mid-term parliamentary elections, saying that otherwise the government will have to bear all the responsibilities for any consequences in the backdrop of its "failure" to run the country.
The demand was made at a rally organised by BNP Thursday in memory of those killed by "Awami terrorists in a barbaric and brutal attack with `logi-boitha' (punt-pole and oar) in city's Purana Paltan area on October 28 in 2006, the day after the BNP-led four-party alliance government handed over power, reports UNB.
Some six people were killed on the spot in the incident. The BNP-led alliance claimed that the victims were leaders and activists of the alliance.
The commemorative rally was held with BNP Vice-chairman and Dhaka city Mayor Sadeq Hossain Khoka in the chair.
BNP Secretary General Khandaker Delwar Hossain, Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Barrister Rafiqul Islam Mia, Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan, Shamsuzzman Dudu, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Amanullah Aman, Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, Fazlul Huq Milon, Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal and Shahiduddin Chowdhury Annie MP, among others, addressed the rally.
Addressing the rally, BNP standing committee member Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain asked the ruling party to announce mid-term elections by quitting power.
Otherwise, he cautioned, the party in power will have to bear all the responsibility for any consequences. He also demanded trial of the October 28 killings.
Speaking as the chief guest, BNP Secretary General Khandaker Delwar Hossain termed the matter of Khaleda Zia's residence "a political issue, not a personal issue."
