BNP extends mass contact for two days until Monday

FE REPORT | Sunday, 31 December 2023

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has extended mass contact through the leaflet-distribution programme for two more days until Monday as part of its ongoing 'noncooperation movement' against the government.
The party will spread its message urging people to boycott the upcoming election through leaflets to be distributed across the country, BNP Senior Joint Secretary-General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi told a virtual press conference on Saturday afternoon.
"Mass contact and leaflet distribution programme will be held again for two days considering the need of people in Bangladesh and across the globe," said Mr Rizvi.
Usually many people celebrate these two days-- December 31st and January 1-- in different ways, he said, adding since the situation is different in Bangladesh, there is no mental happiness in people.
Considering the circumstances, the party will limit its activities to mass contact and leaflet distribution only, he hinted.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr Rizvi also said: "Today (Saturday) is 30th December, that black day. On this day in 2018, the balloting that was expected to be held during the day took place at night through an unprecedented rigging."
Alleging that the government had been continuing mass arrest of the BNP men, he said that over 150 leaders and activists were arrested in 24 hours' period, while more than 400 were arrested in six lawsuits.
On December 20, the BNP commenced a 'non-cooperation movement' 'until the fall of the current government' calling upon the countrymen to boycott the January 7 election.
It also urged people to think about the security of their deposits in banks and to refrain from appearing in court cases.
