BNP gives govt time to ensure fair-poll environment

BNP Secretary-General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Monday said they gave the Dr Muhammad Yunus-led Interim Government the necessary time for creating an atmosphere conducive to holding national elections.
"We have given this interim government the time required to create proper environment for holding an election," he said.
Mirza Fakhrul said this while talking to reporters after a meeting between the Chief Adviser and senior BNP leaders at the State Guest House, Jamuna, in the capital, reports UNB.
This is the first formal meeting between the head of the interim government and BNP leaders since the government's formation on August 8.
The BNP Secretary General, however, said they did not discuss the issue of the election at the meeting.
But they earlier said it will take time to create proper environment for the election. "We've given them the time," he said, adding that BNP did not mention any specific timeframe for the arrangement of the next generation election.
Mirza Fakhrul said his party is giving full support to all the activities of the current interim government.
Our correspondent adds: Mirza Fakhrul also said, it was the responsibility of all patriotic people to cooperate with the interim government for bringing stability and peace in the country.
"Conspiracy is still going on to destabilise the country and to foil the victory of students and people. So it is the responsibility of every patriotic person to cooperate with this (interim) government," Secretary General of BNP Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir told the media after meeting with Chief Adviser of the Interim Government Dr Muhammad Yunus at his Jamuna State Guest House residence in the capital on Monday afternoon.
"We (BNP) call upon the people and the students to remain vigil so that the people of the fallen autocrat couldn't hatch a conspiracy to destabilise the country," he said.
"Today unfortunately those who (Awami League) snatched away people's rights, they fled from here (Bangladesh) to India and staying there and started hatching conspiracy to foil the victory here (Bangladesh)," he continued.
"We (BNP) clearly mentioned (during the meeting with chief adviser) that a story is being concocted about so-called attacks and persecutions on the minority just to malign Bangladesh, to malign this (interim) government and foil the victory of students and people's movement totally," Mr Fakhrul said.
"It is very unfortunate that despite committing so many killings, oppressions, killings of so many students, people and children (during student protests) this party's (Awami League) stalwarts started talking against the country. We requested the interim government to take steps in this regard," he maintained.
"We (BNP) think this (interim) government must talk with political parties, but not talk with those (Awami League) who have killed people (during the recent mayhem)," he continued.
"People are totally against them (Awami League) who have killed students, people and children. We (BNP) will extend our support if the government takes steps and ensure justice for the killings," he mentioned.
He said that a vested quarter was active to create communal unrest to destabilise the country.
"I call upon the people not to be confused about it (conspiracy against communal disharmony in the country) and stand firm to keep the communal harmony and peace in the country," he mentioned.
BNP standing committee members Dr Khandakar Mosharraf Hossain, Barrister Jamiruddin Sircar, Mirza Abbas, Nazrul Islam Khan, Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, Selima Rahman and Salahuddin Ahmed were present during the meeting with the Chief Adviser.
Earlier on the day BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir alleged that a section of Indian mass media started to spread propaganda to foil the students and people's victory in Bangladesh.
"A section of Indian mass media has started to spread propaganda to foil the students and people's victory in Bangladesh. People of Bangladesh will foil that conspiracy," he made the remarks while talking to the journalists after offering doa at the grave of Arafat Rahnan Koko, younger son of party chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia, at Banani Graveyard in the capital marking the deceased's 55th birth anniversary.
"The people who were loyal to the immediate past government (Sheikh Hasina) are also engaged in creating confusion among the people," he added.
