Congratulating the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on its landslide victory in the Lok Sabha election, BNP expressed the hope Friday that the new government in New Delhi will take initiatives for resolving various long-pending bilateral issues like Teesta water sharing and border killings, reports UNB.
"We (BNP) think democracy has triumphed through this victory. We congratulate BJP. We also expect the neighbouring country to work to build good relations with Bangladesh," said BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
Addressing a rally at the Jatiya Press Club in the city, the BNP spokesperson also said, "We believe India's new government will try to read the minds of the Bangladesh people. They'll come forward and take steps to resolve various unresolved issues like putting an end to border killings and due share of common rivers, including the Teesta."
The rally was organised in protest against the filing of 'false' cases against BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia and its senior vice-chairman Tarique Rahman as well as shifting of the trial court conducting cases against them.
Mr Fakhrul wished success of the new Indian government, led by BJP which won the national elections.
However, the BJP's prime ministerial candidate, Modi, during his campaigns for polls, had threatened to deport illegal Bangladeshi immigrants from the neighbouring country if his party won the Lok Sabha elections.
BNP leaders Shamsuzzaman Dudu, Fazlul Haque Milon and Khairul Kabir Khokan, among others, addressed the rally presided over by party joint secretary general Amanullah Aman.
Another report adds: Mirza Fakrul alleged on the day that the government is trying to save the Rab officials allegedly involved in the killing of seven people after their abduction in Narayanganj.
"Why aren't the accused Rab officials being arrested? Why is the government buying time? The government wants to save them as they are being used politically to suppress the opposition," he said.
All Party Student Unity (Apsu) of the 90's Ducsu organised the rally.
The BNP spokesman said the government is not arresting the accused Rab officials even after the High Court's order as one of the accused is the son-in-law of a minister.
Fakhrul alleged that Khaleda Zia and Tarique Rahman are being illegally tried to keep them away from the politics as the duo do politics for people.
On May 7, the trial of Khaleda Zia and Tarique Rahman in Zia Charitable and Orphanage Trust and graft cases pending with the Special Judge Court-3 has been shifted to a makeshift court on the premises of Bakshibazar Alia Madrasah from Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judges court building.
