BNP leader Dr Shahadat to be sworn in as CCC mayor today

CHATTOGRAM, Nov 02: President of BNP's Chattogram city unit President Dr. Shahadat Hossain will take the oath of office as the mayor of Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) today.
After the election tribunal declared Dr. Shahadat as the CCC mayor, the Election Commission (EC) published a gazette in this regard while the local government ministry fixed the date of oath-taking ceremony. Adviser to the LGRD Ministry A F Hassan Ariff is scheduled to administer the oath.
Earlier, Dr Shahadat had filed a case against the then Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), the then mayor Rejaul Karim Chowdhury, secretary of EC, returning officer and other mayoral candidates on charges of rigging the election that was held on January 27 in 2021. He also demanded cancellation of the CCC election.
According to the case statement, only 4 to 6 per cent votes were cast during the election day, but the EC recorded a turnout of 22 per cent, which led Dr Shahadat to appeal before the court.
It may be mentioned that Awami League-backed mayoral candidate Rejaul Karim Chowdhury as well as other ward councillor candidates won the elections.
