Looking for a way to pacify the demonstrating Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) leaders left out of its new committee, BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir had a closed-door meeting Monday with some senior party leaders, reports UNB.
BNP standing committee member and Dhaka City unit BNP convener Mirza Abbas, joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, Jubo Dal president Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal, party student affairs secretary Shaheeduddin Chowdhury Anee and assistant secretary Sultan Salahuddin Tuku, among others, joined the meeting held at the BNP's Nayapaltan central office from 3pm to 3:45pm.
Emerging from the meeting, Abbas told reporters that the problem relating to the JCD committee would be resolved soon. "Chhatra Dal is a big organisation. So, it may have problems. That's quite natural. It'll be resolved soon and a decision to this end will be finalised Tuesday."
However, no one was willing to disclose their plan to overcome the crisis.
Earlier Sunday, after staging violent protests for five consecutive days, the aggrieved JCD men, deprived of posts in its new committee, postponed their demonstration and sit-in programmes in front their Nayapaltan central office following a fruitful meeting with Fakhrul.
Later at night, Mirza Fakhrul talked to Khaleda over the issue and she assigned some senior BNP leaders, including Mirza Fakhrul and Mirza Abbas, to work out a strategy to overcome the problem.
As per the party chief's direction, the BNP leaders sat in the meeting in the afternoon.
Meeting sources said the BNP leaders put forward some suggestions, including induction of the senior dissident leaders in different associate bodies of the party like Swechchhasebak Dal and Jubo Dla while the junior ones in the existing Chhatra Dal committee.
The final decision will be taken to this end after further talks with the party chief, the sources said.
They said Khaleda Zia is likely to sit with a delegation of the dissident JCD men Monday night at her Gulshan office to resolve the problem.
Khaleda Zia approved a 201-member partial committee of the party's youth wing on Tuesday last with Rajib Ahsan as its president and Akramul Hasan general secretary.
But the JCD men, got deprived of posts in the committee, started staging demonstrations in front of the Nayapaltan office Wednesday and continued it until Fakrul's intervention on Sunday.
