BNP long march starts from Airport intersection Tuesday
Monday, 21 April 2014
BNP has decided to kick off its planned long march towards Teesta Barrage Tuesday from Airport intersection instead of its Nayapaltan central office to avoid traffic congestions in the city.
“Our long march will start at 8am (Tuesday) from the intersection near the Airport instead of our Nayapaltan central office. We’ve shifted the venue to avoid traffic jam on a working day in the city,” said BNP joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.
He said they also took verbal permission from the Dhaka Metropolitan Police for the programme.
“India is unilaterally and illegally withdrawing water from common rivers by setting up dams. We’re going to stage the programme demanding our due share of Teesta River water. Our demand is very justified,” Rizvi said.
He said their long march is not a political programme rather it is meant for saving people’s lives, livelihood and the country’s environment.
Spelling out the detailed schedule of their two-day programme, Rizvi said the long march caravan will start its journey for Rangpur, led by party’s acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, from the airport intersection after a short address by Fakhrul there.
On their way to Rangpur, the first wayside rally will be held in Kaliakair around 9:30am while the second on Tangail bypass road around 11:30am, the third at Sirajganj’s Kaddar intersection around 12:30pm, the fourth at Bogra’s Matidhali crossing around 2:30pm, the fifth one at Gaibanda’s Gobindaganj around 3:30pm and the sixth and final one in Gaibandha’s Palashbari around 4:30pm.
After the overnight stay in Rangpur, the party will hold a public rally in the town at 9am Wednesday and then restart their long march towards Teesta Barrage in Nilphamari.
The long-march programme will end after holding another public rally at Dalia.
