BNP may join parliament

Tuesday, 2 February 2010

Opposition BNP will join parliament on Thursday or Sunday to raise the 'crucial national issues', a front ranking leader of the party told UNB Monday night.
BNP Parliamentary Party meeting is being convened on Thursday. "We may join parliament on that day or on Sunday," he said requesting anonymity.
BNP and its allies Jamaat and BJP have been abstaining from parliament after attending for about 23 days of the opening session that began on January 25 last year.
They have been abstaining from the House to press home 11-point demand, including withdrawal of 'false' cases against the BNP leaders, especially of chairperson Khaleda Zia and her eldest son Tarique Rahman.
Opposition chief whip Zainul Abdin Farooque had on Friday hinted at joining the current session of parliament.
Speaker Abdul Hamid on completion of one year of parliament on January 25 said the opposition attended the House for 23 working days out of 95 days.
If any member abstained for 90 consecutive days, he or she will lose the membership.
